Sorry for the Lack of Posts.

I would like to apologize to all of my readers about the lack of posts lately. I am a member of the management committee of my condo here and have been very busy dealing with some possible hanky panky by the management and a few members of the council. Another reason is that the weather here in Penang has been unbearably hot and humid and I have been too mentally and physically tired to think. I promise that I will be back to posting on a regular basis soon.

Indonesian Earthquake Felt in Penang

We had just returned from a cruise to Krabi and Phuket, Thailand yesterday and were taking a nap. Suddenly the bed started shaking and the chandelier began to swing.  Nero, our cat was meowing with fear  and Chi Chi, our prairie dog was nervous and confused. We were welcomed home by an earthquake! We ran out into the corridor and found many other residents there. Many people actually took the elevators down to the ground floor to wait. Not a smart move in an earthquake. Two of our neighbors left the building and were too afraid to come back until after 9 at night.

We immediately tuned to CNN and discovered that an 8.7 earthquake had hit Aceh, Indonesia and a tsunami was expected.  The earthquake was felt in Penang at about 4:30 PM and the tsunami was expected shortly after 9 PM. We closely watched the sea level from our balcony and observed that the tide was out. We noticed that a couple of cruise ships and cargo ships had been moved to deeper waters in case a tsunami did hit.

We felt one small aftershock, but no more. A short while later the tsunami warning was cancelled, as no tsunamis occurred in the region or elsewhere. Everything returned to normal and we are wondering if there are going to be any more aftershocks in the coming days. It was a unique way to wind up a 4 day cruise. I will describe the cruise in the next post.
